Dr. Moroi – Medical Director, Niseko International Clinic

Kunitake Moroi M.D.

Biography

Dr. Moroi is the founder and medical director of Niseko International Clinic (NIC), a year-round primary and urgent care clinic located in the heart of Hokkaido’s world-renowned Niseko Resort. He is a board-certified general practitioner in Japan and also holds ECFMG certification (USMLE) from the United States.

Before entering medical school, Dr. Moroi completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He later studied clinical medicine at Tokai University and completed clinical clerkships in pediatrics, neurology, family medicine, and plastic surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina.

After finishing his postgraduate training at Teine Keijinkai Hospital—renowned for its commitment to training globally competitive physicians—Dr. Moroi joined the Yotei Mountain Foothills Family Medicine Program, where he trained across multiple specialties under the guidance of Dr. Masaji Maesawa, the founding president of the Japan Primary Care Association.

In 2017, Dr. Moroi opened NIC in Niseko Resort. Each winter, the clinic serves over `6,000 international patients`, with more than `2,000 trauma and urgent care cases`, making NIC one of Japan’s most experienced clinics in ski and snowboard-related injuries. Dr. Moroi is especially passionate about trauma care, having personally experienced multiple sports injuries himself. He is also highly experienced in cross-cultural medicine and multilingual patient care.

Background & Philosophy

Born in Kumamoto, Japan, Dr. Moroi grew up surrounded by nature in rural Kyushu. He spent his early years in Fukuoka and Kumamoto, where his father practiced as a pediatrician. A former competitive basketball player and self-proclaimed “Slam Dunk generation” member, he later discovered a love for international travel, English, and adventure sports—including skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and mountain biking.

His diverse background in the arts, global medical training, and deep connection to rural community medicine all contribute to his philosophy: to provide world-class care to both international travelers and local residents, in a setting that blends cutting-edge medicine with personal, compassionate care.

Since 2018, Dr. Moroi has also hosted and mentored international medical students, physicians, and nurses from over 10 countries, making NIC an educational hub for global health training.
